Con Dao National Park
Con Dao National Park has an area of nearly 6,000 ha of land and 14,000 ha of water. Coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangroves provide an environment conducive to breeding, nursing and preserving marine species.
Currently, Con Dao is home to the largest number of sea turtles in Vietnam. There are 17 sandbanks recorded as spawning grounds of turtles, four of which are recorded as having 1,000 mother turtles laying each year.
When taking a holiday in Con Dao National Park, you will experience many interesting outside activities such as fishing, diving, biking, walking or nature sightseeing.
Con Dao Prison System
Con Dao prison was considered as “the hell on earth” during the war against France and USA army. This prison system was built by the French to contain the particularly dangerous prisoners of French colonialism, such as political prisoners, death row prisoners and so on. Here the French colonialists detained communist figures and patriots opposing the colonial government, and were later used by the United States to imprison prisoners during the American war.
The most famous place in the prison area is the “tiger cage”. The “tiger cage” is the harshest place in solitary confinement. Prisoners are detained in rooms only 5 square meters in size, with no beds. The prisoners were shackled and under a damp cement, poor sanitation and eating habits and often were tortured for interrogation. This area for stubborn prisoners who refuse to declare information about Vietnamese Revolution, with the purpose of using brutality to subdue the will of prisoners. To avoid the public opposition, the “tiger cage” was isolated and kept secret for a long time. No one outside notice the existence of the “tiger cage”.
Con Dao Museum
Started construction in December 2009, Con Dao museum with a total cost of over 62 billion, is a meaningful work and a place to preserve historical values, evidence for the period of epic, but also very heroic of the nation.With nearly 2,000 items, the exhibits are displayed in four major themes, reflecting the crimes of colonialism and empire; the resilient spirit of the revolutionary soldiers and patriotic Vietnam during 113 years; the development of Con Dao today as well as the promotion of the value of historical relics Con Dao as a heritage of the nation, education for the younger generation today and later the tradition of revolutionary struggle of the Communist Party and the Vietnamese people.
Hon Ba is the third largest island of the 16 small islands of the Con Dao Islands. Coming to Hon Ba, visitors can easily find beautiful beaches, forest ecosystems and mangrove forests with a variety of rare species of plants and animals.
When you come here, you can walk through the forest about 20 minutes to the West will reach Dam Quoc beach to explore the mangrove forest, swimming, diving to view coral and marine life; or you can climb mountains to conquer Love Peak. In the rainy season, after bathing, visitors can also enjoy the cold spring waterfall at the edge of the forest near the beach.
Bai Ong Dung
Bai Don Beach is a beautiful and ideal beach located in Con Dao National Park about 4 kilometers west from the center. Crossing the center of the national park, you will walk for about an hour on the trail, through the forest and then go to Ong Dung Beach. You may forget all the fatigue and have a feeling of excitement when you watch the fish swimming alongside the beach, colorful coral as welcome you into the blue clear water.
Hon Tai, located on the south-east of Con Son Island, with an area of 34 hectares, attracts visitors with beautifully natural scenery, ideal for relaxing, sightseeing, exploring the nature on the island. Hon Tai has two small sandy beaches. In the breeding season each year (from April to September), hundreds of mother tortoises nesting on the beach and lay eggs, then thousands of turtles are returned to the ocean. Especially, here you also have the opportunity to see squirrel ebony – endemic species only in Con Dao, gecko, lush, red face monkey, etc and many other seabirds.
